Game Recap

Wildcats Holds Off Northern For Victory

Despite seeing its four-run lead whittled down by the end, the Wildcats still held off Northern for a 4-3 victory on Wednesday. Northern scored three runs in the failed comeback on a error in the fifth, a single by Paige Williamson in the fifth, and a home run by Sarah Pleasants in the seventh.

Katie Agatucci earned the win for Wildcats. She tossed seven innings, giving up three runs, six hits, and striking out eight. Hannah Morris took the loss for Northern. She pitched three innings, giving up four runs, two hits, striking out four, and walking none.

The Wildcats 4 run third inning was started with a one out HBP on Geena Kennihan. An infield popup made it two outs before Claire Pedersen reached on an error. Katie Characklis followed that up with another base on error, which also allowed Kennihan and Pedersen to score. Grace Vincent knocked in Characklis with a double and then was promptly brought home on Kehoe’s stand-up triple. The best scoring threat the Wildcats could muster after the 3rd inning was when they got runners on 2nd and 3rd in the top of the 7th inning. But McCullen was able to pick up her second backwards “K” to end the threat.

The Ladies got on the board in the fifth inning with a lead off single. A fielder’s choice and infield pop up caused two outs and a walk put a second runner on base. A routine ground ball was bobbled and then overthrown to first allowing one Northern run to score. A single then scored the second run before a third out could be registered.

In the bottom of the 7th Agatucci faced the #9 batter as lead off and quickly dispatched her with 3 strikes. Sarah Pleasants then took a 1-0 pitch over the fence in right field to make the score 4-3. Ardent then watched 4 balls come over and walked. Two pitches later it appeared East catcher, Kayla Characklis, had bobbled the pitch and Ardent took off for second base. Characklis recovered and threw a flaming dart to shortstop Grace Vincent who applied the tag for the second out.

McCullen then took a 3-0 pitch into deep left center, hitting the fence and settling for a stand up double. The next pitch was a passed ball and McCullen, the tying run, was at third. The next pitch, to Williamson, was a shallow fly ball into center field. Kehoe’s first step slid in the still very damp ground. But the she recovered her feet and made the dash into shallow center for the out to preserve the Wildcats victory.

The Wildcats win puts them in a three way log jam atop the conference leader board with East, Gibbons and now Northern all with one loss.  East faces Gibbons tomorrow while Northern and Gibbons play each other twice next week.

The game against Cardinal Gibbons tomorrow, Thursday April 27, is Senior Day as the Wildcats celebrate their lone senior,
Jenny “The Jet” Suwanmanee.
