Orange High School
East Chapel Hill High School
Mia Davidson ties record – Orange Sweeps East in ’17
Leading off after two scoreless innings Panthers’ catcher, #33 Mia Davidson, took the first pitch from Wildcat pitcher Katie Agatucci deep over the right-center fence. That put Orange up with a lead they would never relinquish and put Davidson into a tie for the NC High School record for home runs in a career. Davidson appeared to have broken the record in the seventh inning when she hit a shot to the gap in right-center. But the rising line drive went right to the Wildcat second baseman, Claire Pedersen, who was playing as a fourth outfielder and was stationed at the fence. On the day Davidson went 1-3 with 2 HbP and was struck out looking in the fourth inning.
Orange would add 3 more runs that inning when, with 2 outs and the bases loaded, the Panther 2nd baseman, H. Funk, was nicked by the first pitch. Orange 3rd baseman, O. Ruff, followed with an 0-1 single for 2 RBIs.
East fought back. The Wildcats plated a single run in each of their next 3 at bats to come within one run of Orange: Characklis sacrificed Pedersen in to score in the 3rd, the other Charlackis’ single brought home the other Pedersen in the fourth, and Kehoe’s RBI single in the fifth plated Agatucci.
Orange erupted for 4 more runs in the top of the sixth inning powered by a pair of singles and a double. An error in the field cost East the opportunity to end the inning with only 2 runs in.
When East visited Orange earlier in the year Agatucci held her hitless on 4 plate appearances with Davidson getting on base twice, once by error and finally, in the seventh inning with the winning run aboard, on an intentional walk.
Orange (4-0, 0-0) begins conference play this week while East (5-2, 4-0) finishes up the first half of their conference schedule* on Thursday when Northern visits.
(*The Riverside postponed game will be made up as a double header in May)
