Claire Pedersen’s Inside-the-Park Home Run Gives the Wildcats Extra Inning Victory Over the Person Rockets.
Wildcats defeated Person 6-5 on Tuesday thanks to an inside-the-park home run by Claire Pederson off Kaity Sullivan that ended the game in the bottom of the 10th inning.
The Wildcats earned the victory despite allowing Person to score three runs in the first inning. Person’s big inning was driven by a 2 RBI double by Kailee Clayton. A fielder’s choice (safe) by Jordan Perkins brought in the 3rd run.
Person led the game until the bottom of the seventh inning. East plated two runs in the bottom of the 4th inning but were quickly matched by the Rockets’ 2 run top of the 5th inning. The two unearned runs were allowed as runners at 2nd and 3rd scored on an East error that otherwise would have ended the inning.
Wildcats finally tied things up at five apiece in the bottom of the 7th inning as left fielder Ella Pedersen led off with a double. Jenny “The Jet” Suwanmanee’s sacrifice bunt (w/ safe-on-error) brought Pedersen home to cut Person’s lead to 1. After a double steal put runners at 2nd and 3rd Claire Pedersen grounded out to short but scored “The Jet” to tie the game and force extra innings.
East got its lead off batter aboard in both the 8th and 9th innings but the Rockets were able to pull off two infield line-drive double plays to clear the basepaths. Person put the Wildcats in a deep jam in the top of the 9th inning by loading the bases with one out. Sullivan walked to load the bases after a marathon 15 pitch at bat as she hit 9 two strike foul balls. Three of them cleared the left field fence but were all called foul. Two force outs at the plate ended the threat.
With one out in the top of the 10th, Claire Pedersen took a 1-0 pitch like a shot past the second baseman all the way to the fence in right-center. Coach Simmons waved her through the stand-up triple and there was a play at the plate. When the dust settled the call was “safe.”
Katie Agatucci earned the win for Wildcats. She threw ten innings, giving up five runs, eight hits, and striking out nine. Kaity Sullivan took the loss for Person. She went nine and a third innings, surrendering six runs, eight hits, and striking out six.
Wildcats had eight hits in the game. Ella Pedersen and Grace Vincent each collected multiple hits for Wildcats. Pedersen led Wildcats with three hits in four at bats.
Person collected eight hits. Clayton, Anna Harris, and Kylie Reaves each collected multiple hits for Person.
The Wildcats travel crosstown to face the Tigers tomorrow in their final non-conference match up before next year’s realignment.
The PAC-6 softball crown will be in the mix next week as East faces Northern & Cardinal Gibbons. Northern & Gibbons face each other twice the following week. The Northern game next week has been rescheduled from Tuesday to Wednesday.
